- Asep Haryono | My Simple Saturday in West Kalimantan, Indonesia - Powered by Blogger
Hello everyone, and greetings to all my fellow bloggers around the world, especially my favorite bloggers from overseas: Mary Kirkland from the United States, Ananka from Scotland, and Irina from Russia. They are three of my favorite foreign blogger friends, and I am always happy to stay connected with them.
Today is Saturday, November 7, 2026.
We are getting closer to the end of 2026, and soon we will welcome 2027. I hope the coming year will bring us more prosperity, opportunities, happiness, and success. I hope that you, wherever you are in the world, will achieve your dreams and have success in your personal and professional journey. I hope so, and I believe it can happen.
Today, my friends, I would like to share a very simple story about what I usually do on Saturdays. My working schedule from Monday to Friday is quite busy. I usually start my day very early, around 4:00 a.m., and continue working until the afternoon. Because of this schedule, I have very little free time during the working week.
That is why Saturday is special for me. It is my free time and my "me time."
I have some activities that I usually do on Saturdays, although I do not necessarily do all of them every Saturday.
In the morning, sometimes my family and I go to a park for jogging or light exercise. Sometimes I go by myself. Since I am already 55 years old, FYI I was born in Jakarta in April 1971 I prefer simple and light activities such as walking, jogging, or other gentle exercise.
I celebrated my 55th birthday in April this year, so I have to consider my age and not push myself too hard.
I also enjoy fishing, although I do not go fishing very often on Saturdays because the river is quite far from where I live. My area in Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan, does not have mountains or a river nearby. If I want to visit a mountain or a river, I have to travel outside the area, and sometimes the journey can take around five or six hours by car.
At around noon, especially on Saturdays, my family and I usually cook lunch together. I have two children. My oldest child, my son, is currently living in Yogyakarta, where he is in his first year of university studying tourism. My daughter still lives with us, together with her mother and me. She is currently in Grade 10 at SMAN 1 Pontianak, or Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 1 Pontianak, one of the well-known high schools in Pontianak.
The three of us at home, my wife, my daughter, and I, enjoy preparing a simple lunch together, especially on Saturdays. Before we start cooking, we usually go to the nearest market to buy some groceries, such as chicken, tofu, vegetables, and other ingredients. Then we prepare the food together at home.
Sometimes I create my own recipe, while my wife enjoys cooking and sometimes follows recipes from a cookbook. Our Saturday lunch is usually simple Indonesian food, such as rice, vegetables, sambal, fried tempeh, fried chicken, and crackers. In Indonesia, we call crackers "kerupuk," and many Indonesians really love them. For some people, a meal without kerupuk does not feel complete.
There is also a funny idea that many Indonesians can probably understand: if you have not eaten rice, you may feel that you have not really eaten a meal yet. This is a reality, true and correct thing here. Even if you have eaten bakso, siomay, dim sum, fried chicken, or many other foods, you may still feel hungry if you have not eaten rice. You can keep thinking, "I am still hungry," until you finally get some rice. It is quite funny, but for many Indonesians, this is very close to real life.

In the afternoon, we usually continue our Saturday activities by doing our weekly shopping. Sometimes we go to a nearby supermarket, minimarket, or shopping mall to buy groceries for the coming week. Instead of buying everything day by day, we sometimes buy vegetables, eggs, rice, and other things that we need for several days. We call this our weekly shopping. Of course, sometimes we also buy things on a daily basis when necessary.
After returning home from shopping, we usually have some quiet family time in the afternoon. My wife, my daughter, and I sit together and talk about what happened during the previous week and what we are going to do in the coming week.
We share our experiences and talk about our daily lives.
I may tell them a little about my current job and what is happening at work. My wife may talk about her work and her experiences teaching students at school. My daughter also tells us about her friends, school activities, and extracurricular activities. Sometimes our conversations are very simple, but I really enjoy these moments.
We have a small space at home where the three of us can sit together. It is not a special or fancy place. Sometimes we simply sit on the floor, while at other times we sit around a small table and some chairs.
We may have some simple snacks or drinks while talking.
For me, this is one of the nicest parts of Saturday. We do not need anything expensive or complicated. Just sitting together, talking, listening to each other, and sharing what is happening in our lives can make a simple Saturday feel very special.
Thank you for reading my simple Saturday story. I hope you are also having a wonderful weekend wherever you are in the world.
Greetings from me
