Today, Wednesday, October 28, 2026, I would like to share my personal experience of online shopping in Indonesia, especially with Shopee. I am writing this article at around 7:42 p.m. Western Indonesian Time. I hope you will enjoy my story.
Getting to Know Shopee Indonesia
In Indonesia, there are several popular online shopping platforms. One of them is Shopee. Perhaps Shopee is also available in other countries. My blogger friends outside Indonesia can check whether it operates in their countries. Shopee offers many kinds of products, different prices, and special promotions. One of its attractive offers is free shipping on selected purchases.
I first learned about Shopee about one year ago. Before that, I used another online shopping platform called Tokopedia. Around eight months ago, I started using Shopee more often. Since then, I have bought several products through Shopee. Most of my experiences have been enjoyable, although some have taught me important lessons.

I enjoy photography, videography, YouTube, and content creation. For this reason, many of the products I buy online are related to my hobbies. I have bought items such as headsets, chargers, tripods, green screens, and other accessories. Shopee offers products at different prices. Some are affordable, while others are more expensive or belong to premium brands.
In my opinion, prices depend on the brand, quality, and product specifications. Well-known brands often cost more, but buyers can also find other products that suit their budgets. One good thing about online shopping is that we can compare products from different stores without leaving home. Shopee also offers different payment methods, depending on the product, seller, and available options. These may include bank transfers, QRIS, and Cash on Delivery (COD).
With COD, customers can pay when their packages arrive, according to the applicable rules. However, in recent weeks, I have noticed that COD has not always been available for my orders. Payment methods may vary, so customers should check the available options before placing an order. Overall, I enjoy shopping on Shopee because there are many products and stores to choose from. However, I have also had some disappointing experiences.
Two Important Shopping Experiences
1. A Mini Tripod That Was Different from the Advertisement One day, I ordered a mini tripod or selfie stick from a Shopee seller. The product pictures looked very attractive. The tripod appeared to have a handle that could move from left to right. It looked well made and could supposedly extend to about one metre. The price was Rp75,000. I liked the product and decided to order it. At that time,
I used Cash on Delivery.
Unfortunately, when the package arrived, the product was not the same as the one shown in the pictures and description.
I was disappointed because the item did not match my expectations.
This experience taught me an important lesson: do not trust product pictures alone when shopping online.
Before buying something, read the product description carefully. Check the specifications and read customer reviews if they are available. You should also compare similar products from different stores.

In my opinion, sellers should provide honest and accurate information about their products. Shopee is a platform where sellers offer their products, but sellers are responsible for the accuracy of their product descriptions under the applicable rules. If an item is different from its description, customers should check Shopee's official return and refund procedures. I hope other shoppers can learn from my experience and become more careful.
2. I Ordered a Digital Camera, but Received a Bottle of Mineral Water
My second experience was even worse. One day, I saw an advertisement for a second-hand digital camera. I cannot remember the exact brand. It might have been Nikon or Canon. The camera looked good, and the price was only Rp250,000.
In my opinion, sellers should provide honest and accurate information about their products. Shopee is a platform where sellers offer their products, but sellers are responsible for the accuracy of their product descriptions under the applicable rules. If an item is different from its description, customers should check Shopee's official return and refund procedures. I hope other shoppers can learn from my experience and become more careful.
2. I Ordered a Digital Camera, but Received a Bottle of Mineral Water
My second experience was even worse. One day, I saw an advertisement for a second-hand digital camera. I cannot remember the exact brand. It might have been Nikon or Canon. The camera looked good, and the price was only Rp250,000.
That price seemed unusually low for a digital camera from a well-known brand, even a second-hand one.
I had some doubts, but I was tempted by the offer and decided to buy it.
The seller offered bank transfer as the payment method, so I paid before the package arrived.
When I received the package, I was shocked. Instead of a digital camera, I found a bottle of mineral water! I was very disappointed. Based on what happened, I considered it a fraudulent transaction. When I checked the store again on Shopee, I found that it had been blacklisted. This experience taught me another important lesson: do not be tempted by prices that seem too good to be true.
If a product looks excellent but its price is unbelievably low, be careful. This is especially important when buying electronics such as digital cameras, smartphones, and other expensive items. Check the seller's reputation, customer reviews, product details, and payment options. Compare the price with other stores.

Fourth, stay safe. Choose suitable payment methods, keep your transaction records, and use the platform's official support channels if you have a problem.
Despite these risks, I believe online shopping is very convenient in today's digital world. We do not always need to travel far by motorcycle or car to buy the things we need. We can stay at home, open a shopping app, place an order, and wait for the package to arrive.
That is one of the greatest advantages of online shopping.
Shopee Indonesia also has special promotions during certain occasions, such as Eid al-Fitr, Christmas, and New Year. Another popular shopping event is the 11.11 campaign on November 11, 2026. During these events, customers may find discounts, free-shipping offers, Shopee Coins, and other benefits, depending on the terms and conditions.
However, we should always shop wisely. A discount is not a real saving if we buy something we do not need or spend more than our budget allows.
